What you need to know

More than 60,000 people sail with the Waterkaarten app every year; from pleasure boaters to fire brigades, commercial shipping and more. With the app, users can sail with up-to-date digital water maps, sailing information and boat navigation. As a strategic partner, Apadmi developed the Waterkaarten app alongside the ANWB since 2011. Seven years later, it was time for a new chapter: Apadmi took over complete development of Waterkaarten from the ANWB. The goal was to further develop the much-loved app, to offer even more skippers a safe experience on the water.

The best thing about this project is that you really see it grow year after year. It is always exciting to see how the ideas that were conceived in the winter come to life on the water during the sailing season in the spring and summer.

What we did

Due to Apadmi's extensive mobile expertise and agile ways of working, Waterkaarten was the perfect application for Apadmi's teams to develop further. We started by taking over the code library whilst redesigning the app based on the feedback from user interviews and tests. To get the renewed Waterkaarten off the ground and into the water, while continuing the rich legacy of the app, we mapped out the existing strengths. With that, we determined the new direction and formulated a number of goals for the app.

How we moved the market

To successfully attract new users and retain current users with an app that is complete, robust and future-proof, a watertight strategy was needed. For Waterkaarten we translated the objectives into a clear service blueprint, based on four pillars: creating a business case, leading product development, implementing product marketing and enhancing customer support.

With new business models, the team focussed on long-term growth. By testing, we were able to implement subscription models that meet the needs of the user, and with data, we built on the results already achieved, while remaining agile to change course quickly. With a dedicated team we have been able to continuously develop the app, with a focus on speed and stability.

Who uses the app, when and how often; we mapped this out to consider consider what could still be improved. Giving users the chance to input and provide feedback has ensured the product's direction is one that best serves customers' needs.

Apadmi's Product Marketing experts measure the app's performance with analytics, after which we experiment with A/B testing. With online advertising, we reach the right target group. And with the help of marketing automation, we stay in continuous contact with the user. We also have set up an in-house support helpdesk with specialised software and a dedicated team that is both flexible and scalable as the Waterkaarten app continues to grow in use.
