What you need to know
GigPig is a hospitality and music marketplace born in 2022 as a response to the post-COVID landscape. Gigpig’s four founders were all working in music and management; they wanted to build a platform to streamline the booking process for venues and artists to be able to match quicker, removing barriers for musicians. GigPig takes away the middleman to empower venues and artists to cultivate unforgettable moments and support a vibrant, thriving community for live entertainment. GigPig is able to put entertainment artists directly in touch with venues to provide a seamless booking experience to play gigs across the UK.
Having quickly established a web presence by early 2023 to kick off the GigPig journey, the team had one recurring request from artists; they wanted a dedicated app. Artist behaviour on GigPig differs significantly from that of venue users. While venues access the platform via mobile 10% of the time, artists do so 43% of the time, underscoring the need for a mobile-first experience. Recognising this, GigPig prioritised developing an app tailored specifically to artists, enhancing their ability to quickly access, and respond to, gig opportunities - this is where Apadmi stepped in.
GigPig selected Apadmi to take on the challenge, recognising our passion for designing, developing and optimising outstanding mobile experiences for major brands across a variety of sectors. A partnership was formed between the two Manchester-based businesses, and work swiftly began on GigPig’s vision of empowering venues and artists to cultivate a thriving live music community with an exceptional mobile experience.
What we did
The aim was to put GigPig’s world-class music marketplace into a seamless app experience, connecting venues and bookers with the best musicians, DJs and entertainers in their area. In order to provide this seamless experience, Apadmi and GigPig built a real-time API connection between the app and the existing web platform. Although the app is designed for artists, this cross-platform functionality directly benefits venues by enabling faster and more efficient communication. And this has already been effective - the average response time from artists using the app has decreased by up to a day, streamlining operations for the hundreds of hospitality venues across the UK that rely on GigPig.
Apadmi advised GigPig on the benefits of a native app - especially the ability to introduce push notifications. With the nature of the music and hospitality industries, artists and venues need real time updates of availability and response to gig offers. Previously, GigPig relied on SMS notifications to achieve this, costing around 3p per message - a cost that could escalate significantly with continued business growth, especially given that a single gig might be sent to up to 1,000 artists. However, moving to push notifications allows for instant, cost-free communication, making them a more sustainable option for GigPig’s business model.
The app launched to market in Summer of 2024 - features include automatic invoicing, transparent payment terms, artists receiving gig payment directly to nominated bank accounts with no fee, invoice storage, gig calendar management, live notifications of new gig opportunities, clear overview of gig statuses with lightning-fast filters, ability to create multiple profiles and upload videos, and much more.
How we moved the market
Since launching the app in May 2024, GigPig has witnessed impressive growth and engagement across their artist community. Artist sign ups have surged by 20% month-on-month, and a significant portion of the 7,000 registered artists have transitioned from our web-based platform to the app. In just three months, over 70% of active artists have adopted the app as their primary tool for getting gigs through GigPig.
App usage metrics also reveal a substantial increase in user engagement. Before the app launch, artists averaged three interactions per week on the platform. Now, that number has quadrupled to 12 interactions per week, highlighting the app's impact on user activity.
Initial user feedback is equally impressive, with users already commenting on the ease of use, as seen in user feedback below.
“The app version is really good, much easier to navigate and to see what you’ve been booked for versus what you haven’t been booked for.”
“I have downloaded the app, so much better than using the website in a web browser!”
