Belgian transport company De Lijn has a monopoly on public urban and regional transport in the Flemish Region, facilitating 520 million+ journeys yearly. De Lijn focusses on customer satisfaction and convenience, ambitions that lead them to reach out to Apadmi for technical and strategic support. Together, we formed a collaborative team to relieve the burden on the public transport provider.

What we did

Apadmi created an app that would serve as a travel guide in customers' pockets; travellers can choose the optimal route and enjoy a carefree journey throughout Belgium. A system with millions of users continuously generates data and feedback - the app we developed for De Lijn is robust and stable, built to collect, analyse and seamlessly process a lot of complex data points.

The app allows passengers to plan and save complete routes, including boarding and disembarking points, connections and disruptions, as well as a handy disembarkation warning notification. We made bus and tram tickets always available and at hand with this seamless mobile experience. The app facilitates m-tickets; from single tickets to day passes and 10-trip cards. Convenience is central here - travellers buy the familiar tickets with just a few taps in the app.

How we moved the market

The De Lijn app uses mobile GPS tracking to help passengers complete their journey. The app knows which line users are on, and when they need to get on or off. Notifications guide the passenger to their final destination. Using Google StreetView, passengers can request an interactive map per stop. This makes travelling more insightful and interactive as every environment can come to life.

The results were quickly impressive, with 158,000 monthly installs, over 30 million app sessions and a 25% increase in customers using mobile as a channel.
